American Airlines Group Number of Aircraft

The chart above displays the number of aircraft operated by the American Airlines group at year end from 2015 to 2022. At the end of 2022, the company operated 1461 aircraft compared to 1,432 at the end of 2021.

As of December 31, 2022, AAG operated 925 mainline aircraft supported by its regional airline subsidiaries and third-party regional carriers, which together operated an additional 536 regional aircraft.

At the end of 2021, the American Airlines Group operated a total of 1,432 aircraft compared to 1,399 at the end of the previous year. The number includes the aircraft owned and leased by American Airlines and the aircraft operated by third party regional carriers under capacity purchase agreements. There were also 36 mainline and 10 regional aircraft in temporary storage as of December 31, 2021. 

The passenger revenue of American Airlines Group in 2021 reached $26,063 million compared to $14,518 million in 2020. However, its total operating expenses in 2021 reached $30,941 million compared to $27,758 million in the previous year. It incurred a net loss of $2 billion in 2021 compared to $8.9 billion in 2020.

AAG carried more than 165 million passengers in 2021 compared to 95 million in 2020. The number of passengers carried by AAG has increased in 2021 compared to 2020 but not reached the pre-pandemic levels yet. In 2019, the number of passengers having boarded AAG flights was 215 million.
