Amazon’s global business operations involve several types of costs including marketing, advertising and sales promotions, research and development and so on. In 2022, the company spent $20.6 billion or $3.7 billion higher compared to the prior year. It generated more than $500 billion in net revenue for the first time in its history in 2022, but incurred net losses worth around $2.7 billion.

2021: Amazon spent $16.9 billion on advertising and promotions in 2021 compared to $10.9 billion in 2020.

In 2019, Amazon spent $11 billion on advertising and promotions when its total marketing expenses amounted to around $18.9 billion. Amazon’s marketing expenses increased sharply in 2019 compared to the previous year. Its total marketing expenses grew by more than $5 billion while its advertising expenses increased by around $2.8 billion.

Advertising and other promotional costs of Amazon rose to 8.2 Billion dollars in 2018 from 6.3 Billion dollars in 2017. These costs are expensed as incurred.
