As of the end of fiscal 2023, Walmart had total 10,623 stores operational globally including 5,317 in its domestic market and 5,306 in the overseas markets. The total number of Walmart stores worldwide increased by 30 units in 2023 compared to the prior year. While the number of domestic stores declined by 25, Walmart’s number of international stores increased by 55 in 2023 compared to the prior year.

2022: The total number of Walmart stores operational worldwide was 10,593 in January 2022 compared to 11,443 an year ago. There were 5,342 Walmart stores operational in the United States as of 2022, the same as the previous year. The number of Sam’s club stores operating in the United States was 600 in 2022 compared to 599 in 2021. Walmart had 5,251 stores operational internationally in 2022 compared to 6,101 stores in 2021.
2021:Â The total number of Walmart stores including the United States and International markets was 11,443. The number of stores in the US equalled 5,342 whereas that in the international markets was 6,101. Apart from these stores, Walmart had 183 stores operational in the US and 221 operational in the international markets.
2020: The total number of Walmart stores including the US and international markets grew to 11,501. Of the total, 5,355 were operational in the US whereas 6,146 were operational internationally.
Walmart was incorporated in Delaware in 1969. The company started its international operations in 1991 and first ecommerce initiative in 2000. The number of total retail units of Walmart in 2019 reached 11,348. Walmart US segment had 4,756 units whereas Walmart International 5,993 and Sam’s club had 599.
Walmart operates retail, wholesale and other units in U.S., Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Central America, Chile, China, India, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom. It conducts its business in three reportable segments that are Walmart U.S., Walmart International and Sam’s Club. The largest of these segments that accounted for around 64% of the total revenue of the brand is Walmart US with operations in all 50 states in the U.S., Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. Walmart International has operations in 27 countries outside USA. Sam’s club is a chain of membership only warehouse clubs.

Walmart uses mainly four formats of retail stores – Walmart stores/discount stores, Super Centers, Neighborhood markets and Sam’s club. While the number of discount stores has continued to reduce over time, the number of super centers, Sam’s club and Neighborhood markets has continued to grow. In 1998, the number of discount stores stood at 1928 which has reduced to 415. The number of Super-centers has grown eight-fold and reached 3522 in 2017 from 441 in 1998. The number of Sam’s club stores has also risen to 660 in 2017 from 443 in 1998. Meanwhile the number of international units grew more than ten fold from 601 to 6363.The number of total retail stores also grew more than three fold from 3406 to 11695.
