The following table shows the Research and development expenses of IBM from 2001-2017.

The technology industry is marked by heavy competition and to remain ahead of the others, the technology brands invest large sums in research and development. IBM’s investment in research and development was  high primarily driven by the impact of acquisitions and effect of currency. In 2017, the Research and development expenses of the brand were 7.3% of the revenue and 7.2% in 2016. IBM spent 5,787 million dollars on R&D in 2017 and 5,751 million dollars in 2016.
