The number of employees at Volkswagen has close to doubled in the last twelve years. Their number stood at 642 thousand in 2017. This was a rise of 16 thousand compared to the previous year.  Out of the 642,292 total headcount, the number of active employees was 615,081. 8004 employees were in the passive phase of their partial retirement and 19,207 were in vocational traineeships.  In 2017, the brand reduced its headcount by 9,800. However, it also added more people at its new plants in Mexico, China and Poland. VW employed a total of 287,480 in Germany and 354,812 abroad.  the highest number of employees were employed in the passenger car division – 507,917.  101,673 were employed in the commercial vehicles division. 16,553 were employed in the power engineering division. 16149 were employed in the financial services division.
