McDonald’s is a leading name in the fast food industry that operates and franchises fast food restaurants in more than 120 countries around the world. The company operates a very large chain of fast food restaurants. A very large part of the fast food chain is run by the franchisees (close to 90%). The brand is trying to expand these numbers further by reducing the number of company operated restaurants and increasing the number of franchised outlets. McDonald’s notes in its Annual Report 2017, “Total assets increased $2.8 billion or 9% in 2017 primarily due to the impact of foreign exchange rates and an increase in cash and equivalents. This was partly offset by the impact of refranchising. Approximately 85% of total assets were in the U.S., International Lead markets and High Growth markets at year-end 2017. Net property and equipment increased $1.2 billion in 2017, mainly due to capital expenditures and the impact of foreign exchange rates, partly offset by depreciation and the impact of refranchising. Net property and equipment represented about 65% of total assets at year-end.” (McDonald’s Annual Report 2017)
