Apple’s total annual research and development expenses increased by 20% in 2022 compared to 2021. Its R&D expenses remained higher for each quarter of 2022 compared to the same quarters of the prior year. In the third and fourth quarters of 2022, the company spent $6.8 billion on research and development compared to $5.7 billion and $5.8 billion in the third and fourth quarters of 2021 respectively.

During the first three quarters of 2019, the research and development expenses of Apple Inc grew by around 15% compared to the last year. Nine months ended June 29, 2019, Apple’s R&D expenses were $12.1 billion compared to $10.5 billion during the same period in 2018. Total research and development expenses of Apple Inc were around 14% higher for the fiscal 2019 compared to last year. In 2019, Apple Inc spent $16.22 billion on research and development compared to $14.24 billion in 2018.
